I had so many expectations of my first trip to Thailand. I was hoping for somewhere fast-paced and different and exciting, but also safe and welcoming and friendly. I was beginning to think no place could live up to that…
Our flight landed at 8pm and after a few quick negotiations with a taxi driver we were speeding towards the Amara Hotel in Silom.
We took a quick dip in our hotel’s rooftop pool then headed straight back out into the city, peering down each side street without really knowing what we were looking for. I was just so excited to be out soaking up the sights, sounds, and yes, even the smells of Bangkok! Soon we spotted an alleyway lined with street food stalls and plastic tables so we pulled up a couple of stools and dove straight in to the quintessential Thai experience – eating!
It was a night of firsts – my first time eating mango with sticky rice, my first time drinking Chang beer (which is stronger than you’d think – more on that tomorrow!) and my first time feeling so at ease in a city I’d just arrived in. I couldn’t wait to see more.
